Romney in ’07: I Hope $3 Gas Leads To Better Fuel Efficiency

Mitt Romney isn’t making this assumption these days, but he certainly did in 2007. Buzzfeed.com released an audio this weekend of a Mitt Romney town hall, five years ago.

During the meeting, someone asked Romney about ending our country’s dependance on foreign oil and making cars more fuel efficient to help prevent global warming.

Romney responded by saying he liked getting off of foreign oil and wanted to reduce the burden of greenhouse gases on the planet. In addition, he thought fuel-efficiency mandates would be helpful too. Here’s what he said about $3.00 gas,

I’m hopeful that with $3.00 gasoline charged by Hugo Chavez and Ahmadinajad, that you’re gonna see Americans slowly but surely move to more fuel efficient cars and you’ll see car companies compete each other with fuel efficiency.
