City Council Special Session: What Did We Learn?

James Craig

If anyone was expecting an open forum at last night’s Cincinnati City Council special session, they would’ve been disappointed.

Last night, in a special council meeting scheduled by Chris Smitherman and Charlie Winburn, police chief James Craig addressed the council members on the rise in violent crime. Other council members present at the meeting were PG Sittenfeld and Wendell Young.

The big topics of the night were the funding of Crime Stoppers and CIRV. Smitherman asked the police chief whether or not funding Crime Stoppers could motivate citizens to be more vigilant. Winburn asked the police chief questions on CIRV’s effectiveness. Chief Craig said both of these are effective. Craig believes as long as CIRV can create jobs for ex-offenders, the program can work.

Throughout the meeting, Chief Craig was stressing the importance of helping ex-felons. In addition to building programs to help Cincinnati’s youth, such as his boot camp, these can be helpful in reducing the violence in the city.

If you do want to voice your opinions about the recent violence in the city, there is a public safety meeting, May 1st at 2 pm in City Hall.
