Monday, Roland Martin interviewed Nola.com columnist Jarvis DeBerry on former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin’s ongoing criminal trial.

Nagin is currently facing a 12-count federal indictment on corruption allegations. He’s been charged with accepting cash, gifts and trips in exchange for influence. DeBerry says the allegation are ironic given Nagin’s promises to rid city government of corruption as a candidate for mayor.

“This is the guy who came in and one of his very first acts in office was to march cab drivers through the city, cab drivers who were said to be corrupt,” says DeBerry. “It seemed to be the action of somebody who was very serious about corruption no mater how petty it may have seemed to be to outsiders. And here it is now that he’s on trial for some very serious allegations.”

According to DeBerry, the most “despicable” charge against Nagin, however, was allegedly blocking employment from a needy community in an attempt to strike a contracting deal on behalf of his son. “In that allegation, he basically put himself directly in front of the people and said this is about me, it’s not about y’all,” DeBerry says.

Listen to Jarvis DeBerry offer commentary on Nagin’s ongoing corruption trial.
