The Hair Buzz w/Kim Turbow

kim2

Kimberly Ann Turnbow is a 40 year old professional hair stylist who has been in the business for a little over 20 years. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Kinard and LaVera Durham. She knew from the time she was a child that she wanted a career as a hair stylist. Upon entering Withrow High School, her general studies were accompanied by their cosmetology program, a special vocational course offered there. She studied about hair under the watchful eye of an excellent instructor, Mrs. Pat Estes, who immediately recognized that Kim had a unique vision, as well as the ability to master skills of styling and maintaining beautiful healthy hair. Soon after her high school graduation and completion of the cosmetology program , she had the opportunity to shadow at a salon owned by local entrepreneur, Mr. Steve Reece. Upon obtaining her license, her journey began as a stylist at Hair Affair Beauty Salon, owned by Sandra and Thabit Shakir. Sandra would become her longtime friend, as well as her mentor. It was under Sandra’s distinct principles that she received her managers’ and instructors’ licenses, as she worked hard and steady to acquire her own salon.

In 1999, Kim’s dream would become a reality with the opening of her very own business, Stylistic Hair Salon. A few years later, in 2004, she became a platform artist and technical consultant  for Avlon Industries, the makers of the KeraCare Affirm and Ferm Hair Care Systems, where she remains an active team player.

She has demonstrated her skills at countless hair shows and taught other professionals how to properly identify a client’s hair texture (natural and chemically treated). Her work ethic and level of expertise allows her to educate clients as well as professionals about products which promote healthy hair growth and maintenance. She has earned the respect of her fellow counterparts in the industry as a “stylist who cares”.

In 2010, economic decline forced her to close her salon; with determination and drive, she continued to work toward opening her own salon again.

Her passion is teaching not only her clients, but her staff about her art– creating and maintaining healthy hair. She is certified to give CEU hours to other licensed cosmetologist as well , and currently has a pending patent for a wrap cap she created to protect the hair.

In December 2012 Kim re-opened her salon in the same location: with a new vision and a different name. The Hair Gem Elite Salon, located in the Bond Hill area, is home of the “growing hands”. Currently, she specializes solely in natural hair care and management.  She also has a team of stylists of like minds.

Kim’s passion for teaching and putting out the right information to fellow stylists and to the consumers is what makes Hair Buzz, her new live talk show, very necessary. The first show aired live in November 2013 on 1230 The BUZZ, and her dreams of hosting her own show came true.

Her mission is to keep your hair on your head, and not on the floor. Look for healthy hair products in the near future with her name on them.
